NHS Highland is looking to recruit Locum General Diagnostic Radiologists to join our existing team based at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. Any existing subspecialist interests will be considered, but interests in musculoskeletal, paediatric, intervention, urology or mammography would be particularly welcome.

NHS Highland's Radiology Service provides comprehensive diagnostic and interventional services to a widely dispersed resident population of over 320,000. The majority of services are delivered from Raigmore Hospital, the 450 bed regional hospital in Inverness, where there are currently ten consultant radiologists. Services are also provided at a network of rural general hospitals in Wick, Fort William and Oban.

Successful applicants will join a dedicated team of 12.5 Radiologists in the Highlands (two of whom are based in Oban). With a region wide equipment inventory that includes five 64-slice CT scanners, four with up to date dose reduction technology, including a recently installed GE Discovery HD scanner, two 1.5T MRI scanners both to be replaced imminently, a suite of recently purchased Philips Affiniti ultrasound machines, and a £4 million combined interventional radiology / cardiology suite, we are well equipped to meet the challenges of delivering a modern service to the largest catchment area in the UK, accounting for 40% of Scotland's land mass.

Inverness city offers an unrivalled quality of life, a pleasant and safe environment in which to live, a varied cultural life and first rate educational opportunities. The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the country and pollution is the lowest of any city in the UK. One of the cleanest and most scenic city environments to be found anywhere in Europe. There is easy access to the coast, lochs, mountains and glens that help make the Highlands the most dramatic and scenic part of the United Kingdom, supporting a wide range of outdoor pursuits from mountain biking, climbing and skiing, to sailing and wildlife observation and conservation. A wide and growing range of indoor sporting, leisure and cultural activities are also available in and around Inverness. A recent estate agent survey ranked Inverness 5th out of 189 British cities for its quality of life.

Radiology reporting is facilitated by NHS Scotland's national PACS and will benefit from the ambitious programme now under way delivering fibre-optic broadband internet service throughout the Highlands, allowing us to explore the feasibility of remote working. The service is supportive of part time and flexible working. The on-call commitment is currently a 1:10 rota, with outsourcing of most overnight CT scans which includes most evenings and part of the weekends. This has been introduced to support a positive work-life balance, to benefit the daytime work of the service and facilitate a competitive recruitment environment.

The radiology service has excellent working relationship with other clinical specialties in Raigmore Hospital and the Highlands. There is a wide and growing reputation for excellent junior training, high clinical standards, burgeoning academic profile and friendly constructive environment supporting professional development.

Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register with a Licence to Practise. Candidates are encouraged to visit the department.
